5 Entrepreneurial Freedoms

You’re a business owner and entrepreneur.  You decided to walk a different path. Chances are high that, whether you realize it or not, you are working hard to hold true to values that are uniquely yours.  You’re designing a business that supports and aligns with your ideal lifestyle.

But why?

Because you know that the archaic model of getting a “job,” working 40 hour weeks for 40 years to save for a retirement that may never actually come seems questionable at best.  You resist popular beliefs because deep down it simply doesn’t feel authentic to who you are.

This is your life and you only get one.  Your journey is unique and it needs a set of metrics that lead you to what you ultimately want…FREEDOM.

At Level 5 Mentors, our mission is to help entrepreneurs achieve the highest levels of freedom in five key areas of life: health, time, money, relationships, and purpose.  Throughout this article, we will tackle each one individually to help you create a clear understanding of where you are now, and where you will be in the future.

Everything is a priority until you get sick.  All of a sudden, you realize that only one thing is truly important.  Your health.

But nonetheless we push harder, sleep less, and neglect our health.  We do this to attain “things” that, at the end of the day, simply don’t matter

I don’t feel that I need to explain further.  Without your health, what is the point of planning for the future at all?

The only freedom that can only be spent, not earned nor created.  Unarguably, the most valuable commodity that we have.

I believe the profoundness of this realization cannot be understated.  One of my favorite quotes comes from Confucius…

“We have two lives, and the second one begins when we realize we only have one”

For many of us, lessons in the value of time come the hard way…loss and its ugly step sister, regret.  Loss of loved ones. Loss of opportunity. Loss of health.

By making this one of our 5 core freedoms, the goal is to prioritize time with all the respect it is due.  Tomorrow is not guaranteed and life should be lived with a delicate balance of enjoying the moment and planning for a future aligned with your values.

We all get hyper-focused on money.  We pursue it until we get it and then, for many, realize making money the end goal is a tragic mistake.

Money, at its most basic level, is simply how we exchange value.  It’s a bartering system that has evolved over the millennia. It’s important to call it for what it is and then dig deeper into its importance.

In order to have true freedom in this area of our life, the first step is understanding how much is  enough and WHY you want it. The second step is understanding the difference between income and wealth.

Western society is fascinated by income, but why?  If you make a million and spend a million, where does that leave you?  If you are hitting your intelligently thought out income goals, optimizing profit, and setting up your income to build wealth, THEN you are truly on the path to freedom.

By creating wealth, we are able to step into the fullest expression of who we are and total impact we can make over a lifetime.

The freedom of relationships, like all five core freedoms, is tightly interwoven with the other four.  Who do you spend your time with? Are these people that inspire you? Understand you? Support you? Love you?  Make you laugh?

If all superficial things were stripped away (status and belongings), would you choose to spend your time with a person?  Do your working relationships result in an impact that never could have been achieved individually?

These are critical questions that must be asked on a regular, if not daily, basis.  Fulfilling, personal relationships, worthwhile collaborations, and a strong sense of belonging are keys to a life worth living.

If you are still reading by this point, some (or all) of the concepts laid out here have struck a chord with you.  You’re seeing that these are the metrics that matter. These are the values and freedoms that lead to a purposeful life.

The freedom of purpose connects with humanity’s deepest and most universal questions.  Why am I here? What is my purpose? How can I make a bigger impact?

As entrepreneurs, these questions seem to ring a bit louder than for most.  In striving for all five freedoms, we make room to pursue our highest purpose.  The challenge is understanding what that is and taking daily action to achieve it.

These five freedoms lead us to one succinct point… the ability to do what we want, when we want, with whomever we want.

It’s simple, but certainly not easy.  If it was easy, everybody would do it.  As cliched as that statement is, its truth is undeniable.  As entrepreneurs, we take risks and resist the status quo. We do things today that other’s won’t do so that in the future we can live lives that others simply can’t.

You play a different game which necessitates a different scoreboard.  The Five Freedoms ™ are that scoreboard and we live by them every…single…day.
